Two weeks ago I began developing my GAME plan. GAME is an acronym for set Goals, take Action, Monitor, and Evaluate and extend, and is used to assist in self-directed learning (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009). The first goal I set was to create a classroom website that will be used to provide information to students, families, and the community, and a place where students can publish their work. My second goal is to introduce and show my colleagues what technology can do for them in the classroom. This week I am monitoring my progress on these goals.
I have spent some time looking for the information and resources I need and have found a lot of helpful information on creating a quality classroom website. Two of these resources are located at http://k6educators.about.com/c/ht/00/07/How_Classroom_Web_Site0963767121.htm and http://hubpages.com/hub/10-Tips-for-an-A-Plus-Classroom-Website. The tips they offer have been helpful. The information that I am still having difficulty obtaining is from my own school district which seems to have put a hold on my request for permission to place school information on my website until after the holiday vacation. I have also been gathering information to provide to my colleagues on the benefits of technology in the classroom. After reviewing effective assessments using technology this week in class I knew some of my colleagues might be interested in learning more about it. Ross noted that assessing with technology provides flexible options for testing student content learning (Laureate Education INC., 2009). Last year I began building digital portfolios with my students. This morning I had the opportunity to share examples of these portfolios with a few of my colleagues. The information located at http://electronicportfolios.org/handbook/index.html was extremely helpful in talking about the process of using electronic portfolios and how to get started. I think I have at least one of my colleagues interested in using something similar with her students and I will be talking more about it with her next week. Does anyone else have additional information or resources that I might find helpful in this area?
At this point I do not feel like I will need to modify my GAME plan, other than to reflect a more realistic time table for development of my classroom website. I have a general idea of website design and links to helpful resources I seem to be at the mercy of my school district on moving forward. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions on this? I am beginning to think I should build the page using software and then try to move it to a site when I get the okay. The problem is that I am unsure what I will get the okay to put in the website. Hopefully I will find out early next week.
So far I have learned to keep up with my goals. With my busy schedule it can be easy to put these goals on the “back burner” and forget to go back to them later. I have asked one of my colleagues at school to help me with this by asking me each day where I am on carrying out my GAME plan.
The new question that arose from this monitoring of my GAME plan is if my time table is still doable for my website. I wanted to have it running by the end of the blogging assignments. I hope to be able to move ahead as soon as possible this next week.
As always, I welcome thoughts, comments, and suggestions on my blog.

Shannon,
ReplyDeleteYou are doing a great job reaching your goals. Your goals are very attainable and well thought out. I am looking forward to viewing your classroom website toward the end of this course. I hope your district does not take too long to respond. The resources that you shared above are very helpful. I viewed all of them and really liked the helpful hints from the K6Educators.about.com. I do not have any site recommendations for you in regards to on-line portfolios, but I use Microsoft clipart for a lot of images. (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/clipart/default.aspx) If you haven't visited their site, it's worthwhile. Good luck this next week while you continue to accomplish your game plan. Great idea to involve your colleagues for support and encouraging reminders!!
Jennifer
Are the school and classroom websites throughtout your school district similar? Last year our school district changed all of the school websites so now all of the school websites have the same template. I'm assuming that in the future our classroom websites will also be using the same template as well. You might want to view other school and classroom websites in your school district to see if there is a certain template or software program you should be using for your own classroom website.
ReplyDeleteJennifer,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for that link. I was able to put it to use today actually. I create a lot of PowerPoint stories for my students based on our theme unit and usually use pictures I have taken or from the Microsoft clipart. It is much easier to get the rights and document where the images come from that way.
Thanks again,

Brian,
ReplyDeleteIt is funny that you should ask about other classroom websites in my district. I found out that there my district used to allow each teacher space to post a class website. Then about two years ago they deleted everyone's space whether they had a site or not. They said many teachers were not keeping them updated and they wanted everyone to start from scratch and follow a template. Now it is a couple years later, they have no template, and we still do not have our space back. I was told the person I need to talk to was out sick today so I will try again tomorrow. I want to just find a space online that I could use, but then I am not allowed to have it link or be associated with our district without permission. I was getting a little frustrated today, but I know that will not help my case.
Great idea though. I think I will spend some time looking at other school websites to get an idea of how I want the layout.

Hello Shannon,
ReplyDeleteI think creating a website is exciting! I remember attempting to complete a website during undergrad but my instructor was not educated or trained enough to show us how to complete it so he decided to do away with the website. Creating a website I believe will really have your students engaged. Children enjoy designing things where they can be creative and show their personality. A webpage almost reminds me of myspace. I am considering to create an activity where my students will have to design their own webpage where they have to include all of their assignments but it's a little overwhelming just thinking about it. I think that you have a really good GAME plan and I know that time is always a factor so just try and plan the best way you can. If time seems to be running out, you may need to cut out certain parts of the website in order to stay on track.
Shannon,
ReplyDeleteMy school district also uses a template for all schools. On each site the teacher can link his/her own personal classroom website. Have you been able to get permission to link a site? I am the person in my school that is responible for updating our school site, and it's hard to get teachers to take just a few minutes to update their status. It could be such a great tool to keep parents and students informed about upcomping events, homework or projects.
Each teacher at my school has his/her classroom rules posted on their page along with a space for homework and other information, but very few teachers utilize it. We also have an online program called Powerschool where teachers are required to post student grades by Monday of every week and then parents and students can access it from home to view grades and see if they have missing work. From what I have heard many of our parents use this tool. I think the reason parents don't access their child's teachers webpage is becuase they either don't know about it or the teacher doesn't keep it updated and they don't say anything.
It sounds like you have a good plan going. I hope you get your site going before long. Just keep trying.
